The History of Gin

Gin has become one of the most popular spirits of today, often mixed with tonic. However, it’s actually been around for quite some time, with confirmed roots dating back to the 17th century. If you’re interested to learn a little more about your favourite spirit, below you’ll discover a brief history of gin. Where it all started The confirmed production date of gin was reportedly in the 17th century. The spirit is said to have started out in Holland, where it was actually used as a medicine to treat gallstones, stomach complaints and gout. However, some argue that it dates even further back in time and was originally produced in Italy. Wherever it initially began, it is known that the spirit did start out as a medicine until the Dutch made it consumable by adding flavour using juniper berries. The drink quickly become popular, along with other spirits. However, in the 1730’s, alcohol abuse was a real problem. The poor began drinking to cope with the tough circumstances they were facing. This ultimately led to the introduction of The Gin Act in 1736. This made gin extremely expensive; something the Prime Minster at the time, Sir Robert Walpole, was against. He was right to be worried too, as it led the common people to rebel. Gin riots were a thing Infuriated by The Gin Act, riots broke out and many openly broke the law. Just two distillers paid for the new £50 license fee over the six years the law lasted, yet the production of gin in London rose by a staggering 50%. People weren’t afraid to break the law, so the act was repealed by 1742. A new policy was instead introduced, which distillers helped to draft. This saw high, yet reasonable prices introduced and led to a lot of new, respectable retailers setting up to sell spirits such as gin. The riots stopped and gin, along with other spirits, became a more sophisticated choice of beverage. A transformation into a cosmopolitan, refreshing drink Over the years, gin production became much more refined. Subtle flavours transformed the drink into the cosmopolitan beverage that we know and love today. It started to become popular within more elite circles. Gin has for decades been a main rival of Vodka, however the two are actually very similar – if it wasn’t for one key step the two would literally be the same thing. The two drinks are both column-distilled (a technique developed by Robert Stein and Aeneas Coffey), but the difference comes when Gin is redistilled with various blends of ingredients and botanicals that create the variety in flavour. Similarities aside – Gin has an ever-growing fan-base that continues to grow and evolve flavours and methods. By the year 1951, the Bartenders Guild featured more than 7000 cocktails on file. Gin was considered one of the top three alcoholic beverages for home entertainment. Today, gin and tonic remains one of the most popular choices. 4 Ways Cities Save Money on Sewer Repair

United States cities are suffering from aging infrastructure, from bridges to highways and sewers. Aging water and sewer systems are a major concern that’s been amplified by Hurricane Harvey and Irma. Sewer systems were unable to properly manage the overflow of water, causing untreated sewage to pour into the streets and people’s homes. Flash floods are causing similar issues in cities where the infrastructure might date back to the late 1800s or early 1900s. Cities are often underfunded, leaving the cities to repair sewer lines and “do their best” to correct systems that are past their useful lifespan. 1. Service Line Warranty Programs Cities are teaming up with utility companies to offer residents service line warranty programs. Phoenix residents have saved over $1 million with similar programs. The warranty is voluntary, but it has reduced water line repair costs. Taxpayers pay less in taxes, helping add to general fund programs and save the city money. The programs also generate local revenue through the use of local contractors and companies that are dispatched to make repairs. It’s a mutually beneficial program that aims to help both Phoenix residents and the city itself. 2. Bidding Wars with Contractors Cities have multi-million dollar projects that plumbers want to fulfill. There is a lot of money at stake, and it makes sense to use the potential to make millions as leverage for the city. Martinsville is a prime example of how a bidding war among contractors led to $3.8 million in savings. Officials and consultants estimated the city to pay $11.4 million to repair a major sewer line. Four contractors bid on the project, with the lowest bid being $7.97 million. The bidding process didn’t result in a local contractor getting the job, but city officials are happy that a local contractor is a subcontractor for one of the bidding companies. Bids can be part of any business transaction or service, and they can be used to keep costs low. 3. Trenchless Pipe Repair Digging up roadways, blocking streets and causing a city to lose revenue from closures. Cities are starting to use a new technology to repair sewers: trenchless pipe repair. This method is less invasive and effectively creates a new pipe inside of the existing, older pipe. The process is being used often so that roadways don’t need to be disturbed. And the good news is that the costs are kept slightly lower or on par with replacing an existing piping system. 4. Sewer Camera Inspections Hundred-year-old infrastructure will have a lot of buildup, clogs and even tree roots growing in the system. The problem is that before camera inspections, cities spent a lot of money on the mere “guesses” of plumbers. Camera inspections have changed everything. Plumbers can now look deep into the sewer system and assess the situation. They can even determine if a pipe is so far past its lifespan that it needs to be replaced rather than repaired. It’s a cost-saving way to judge the potential of a repair over a replacement.

Absurd Laws You’ve Been Breaking and Could Be Jailed For

In the free world, every single person has to abide by certain rules of law. Why? Well, there are a bunch of reasons that range from the fact anarchy is packed full of flaws, people can’t be trusted to rule themselves in a whimsical fashion and, above all else, so the rights of the smallest minority are upheld and protected; that small minority being you, the individual. However, for all the good and all the sense that is intended, there are exceptions to every rule and so you can be sure to find some seriously absurd laws upheld the US justice system. You probably know what we are talking about because you’ve no doubt stumbled across a bunch of laws so weird they could be considered myths or urban legend, and most of the time that’s all they are. They are unsubstantiated claims by websites that a) can’t be bothered to check updated records and b) prefer clickbaiting to fact-checking. That said, there are a plethora of, quite frankly, dumb laws out there, many of which you might be breaking. Don’t worry, though, as real as they are, a good lawyer can assist if you’re going to trial. Of course, instead of waiting until the police come knocking and for your mouth to hang open at the absurdity of it all, the best form of defense is knowledge, which is why we have made a list of the most absurd laws out there, some of which could be upheld in your very state. It’s time to laugh and cry. No Disagreeable Odors In Alabama Now, if you are a trainee teacher wondering where to apply your trade, you may want to consider Alabama for the simple fact any object with the sole purpose of creating disagreeable odors are strictly prohibited here. That means stink bombs, funk balls and anything else that falls within this bell curve are actually illegal to use. For the first time ever, schools could be a haven for learning; who would have thunk it? It’s Illegal To Be Drunk in A Bar In Alaska This is one of those laws so ridiculous, outdated and archaic you would think it is most definitely a piece of false news from Trump’s Twitter account. However, it is totally true. In Alaska, it is illegal for anyone that is already drunk to “knowingly” enter a bar in order to consume more alcohol, and it is illegal for anyone to remain in the bar they got drunk in. This is a juxtaposition that is as cruel as it is confusing. But while it may be easy to wiggle your way through the term ‘knowingly’, you may not want to hedge your bets because the police here actually enforce it. The Only Advertisement In Hawaii Is Hawaii To put this bluntly, billboards have largely been outlawed in Hawaii, as has aerial advertising. What’s astonishing is how long this law has stood, dating way back to 1927. However, as far as we can tell, this is not a stupid or foolish law, not in any respect. Quite the contrary. It was put in place as a way of ensuring the natural beauty of this state was never compromised and an urban beautification initiative was started. If you were to ask us, it is one of those laws that should be upheld everywhere. No Patriotic Dancing In Massachusetts At the moment, we are seeing a huge uproar as sports stars the world over refuse to stand during the national anthem, electing to kneel as a way of protest against police brutality. However, this is a matter of opinion and not law, so it may astound you to hear that dancing to the Star Spangled Banner is full-on illegal in Massachusetts. Now, given this law dates all the way back to 1917 and the first world war era, it is easy to see how excessive patriotism drew this law up. Yet it still stands today. Now, we have no idea how people would interpretively dance to the anthem but, it is worth noting, that this state law is somewhat overruled by a little-known document called the First Amendment. Bagels Are Not Born Equal In New York The great state of New York is known for a lot of things, including its love of bagels. However, what many people don’t know (including the majority of serving police officers and IRS agents) is that any bagel you buy that has been altered carries a pretty hefty eight cent sales tax on it. That means any bagel that has been sliced, toasted, covered with salmon and cream cheese or halved is going to be more expensive than the usually tax-free uncut bagel. It is a crazy world we live in. They Do Drone On In West Virginia You could look at it as slightly backwards or you could see it as upholding the skill involved in hunting but, in West Virginia, it is illegal to use a drone to hunt birds. Actually, it is illegal to use any unmanned aircraft, which begs the question, “could you go grouse hunting in a Northrop F-5 so long as you were in control?” It’s probably worth an email to your local senator. The other hunting law that you may need to know about is to do with hunting while in the woods, in which ferrets are illegal to use as a replacement for a dog. Ignore this rule and get caught, then you will be faced with a $100 fine right there and then. No New Year Celebrations In North Dakota This is one of the most ridiculous things you may have ever heard but, In North Dakota, it is illegal for anyone to set off fireworks before 8am or after 11pm, at least in Devil’s Lake. That is totally true. Of course, they aren’t all about upholding noise laws. They do have some fun. It just seems to happen once every thousand years, or at least that is what an amendment dating back to 1999 makes it look like, where North Dakota temporarily allowed the sale of fireworks between Boxing Day and New Year’s Day. Frisbee No-Throw Zones In Montana If you have ever driven across the huge plains of Montana then there are no doubts you will had the same shower thought as everyone else, “just how far could one throw a frisbee here?” It is one of those questions that has demanded an answer since the cognitive function was first developed. However, letting curiosity get the better of you could see your wallet become $500 lighter because it is absolutely illegal to go folfing anywhere but a designated folfing course. Now, if you just read the word folf and drew a blank, don’t worry, it’s not a well-known term – yet. Folfing is frisbee golfing and, yes, it is illegal to just do it anywhere, something that is worth remembering before you just go seeking answers on the Montana plains. Dueling Is Strictly Forbidden In Kentucky Well, that’s not strictly true. But if you want to become a public official or an attorney in this fine state then you need to stand in a courtroom and swear an oath that you have a) never fought in a duel with a deadly weapon (wooden spoons are fine) and b) never been the second during another person’s duel. Now, you may think this is pointless information, but just imagine how frustrating it would be if you endured college, went through all those exams and got elected into a position of authority only to be denied on a technicality. So, for the sake of your own future self, no duelling please.

According to estimates made by NOAA’s National Geophysical Data Center, the world’s oceans consists of 321,003,271 cubic miles of water. It has also been acknowledged that they cover 71 per cent of Earth. So, what can actually be found within these vast spaces? Subsea pipeline inspection specialists Tracerco aims to find out… Examples of life There are already hundreds of thousands of known species which exist in the world’s oceans. However, claims by scientists state that many more forms of marine life are yet to be discovered. On top of this, there are 4,000 species of coral reef fish to be found too, which is close to a quarter of all of the world’s marine fish species. Just be aware that a millilitre of ocean water also contains close to 1 million bacteria and 10 million viruses. Examples of geographical wonders Keeping with nature, the largest living structure on Earth finds its home in our ocean. This is the Great Barrier Reef — it measures around 2,600km and is so huge that it can be spotted from the Moon. Meanwhile, the Mariana Trench is the deepest known area across the ocean floor. Located in the western Pacific Ocean and to the east of the Mariana Islands, the deepest point found here measures in at an estimated 11,000 metres — or 36,000 feet. The average depth of the Earth’s oceans is also 3,720 metres — or 12,200 feet. Then there’s the Mid-Oceanic Ridge — the world’s longest mountain range. This mountain chain stretches for more than 56,000km across and covers parts of the Atlantic Ocean, the Indian Ocean and the Pacific Ocean. Meanwhile, Earth’s highest mountain in the ocean is the Mauna Kea. Found off the coast of Hawaii, the mountain rises for 10,203 metres (33,474 feet) from the ocean floor, with 4,170 metres (13,680 feet) viewable above sea level. Further examples of geographic wonders which are based in our oceans include a series of underwater volcanoes that explode with mud and methane as opposed to lava, and brine pools — these can all be discovered in the ocean close to the Gulf of Mexico. There’s also underwater hot springs found across the Earth’s oceans, where water with temperatures of 650°F shoot out — that’s hot enough to melt lead. Examples of artefacts, remnants and treasure The number of artefacts and remnants found in every museum across the globe is much less than the number to be found in the Earth’s oceans. There is almost 20 million tons of gold within the Earth’s oceans too — if all which was suspended was mined, there would be enough to give each person on the planet around 9 pounds of gold. The ocean floor has also gathered an estimated $60 billion in sunken treasure. On top of all of this, scientists have predicted there is as much as 50 quadrillion tons of dissolved solids contained there too. Calcium salts, magnesium salts, potassium salts and sodium salts make up the bulk of this huge figure.
